Critically Acclaimed, Australian Musician Nick Charles will be bringing you an evening of  guitar music ranging from folk and blues to bluegrass, ragtime and jazz.  With special guests, Emporia’s own, Prairie Canaries.

About Nick Charles

Nick Charles has been a performing and touring acoustic musician for over 25 years on the Australian and international acoustic music scene.

Averaging over 200 shows a year from Perth to Sydney and LA to Kansas City – including many major guitar, folk, blues and jazz festivals – the eclectic nature of Nick’s music continues to delight and captivate his audiences .

With five critically acclaimed albums to his credit and numerous awards, Nick is an artist who is in high demand for concert appearances and workshops. His musical influences are many and varied and include the seminal blues of Big Bill Broonzy and Blind Blake, the countrified picking of Doc Watson and Merle Travis and the infectious swing and melody of Django.

The prestigious Melbourne newspaper, “The Age”, has declared him “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots guitar” and Artstreams Magazine states emphatically he is “ the best picker on the scene”.

“Nick Charles plays acoustic guitar with the deceptive ease of a virtuoso. Having consolidated his Australian reputation, he’s been winning plaudits overseas and was recently signed to California’s Solid Air Records. His latest local release, New Kind of Feeling, is not so much a departure as a logical, upbeat progression with several appealing vocal tracks and the emphasis on original compositions. Charles has technique to burn: check out the finger-twisting First Crossing and Ribcracker, or the supple ragtime on The Shearwater Shuffle. Yet the emphasis is always on melody and feel, the music accessible and audiences — pickers and punters alike — are never disappointed. One cover sure to win airplay on grown-up FM is Peter Green’s spaced-out Albatross. The standout is Say What You Mean, marrying laconic vocals with a great jazzyblues arrangement. As part of the Celebration we are raffling off a restored 1948 Chevrolet Stylemaster Town Sedan to help support the care and maintenance of the Emporia Granada Theatre.

The car was originally given away on July 7th, 1948  (it was new then, it’s a classic now) by the Emporia Fox Granada Theatre.

Classic film nights at the Granada Theatre let you step back in time to view your favorite films on the big screen once again.

The show goes on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00pm. The doors open at 6:00 pm to allow you plenty of time to stock up on your favorite snacks and the Granada’s tasty fresh popped popcorn and refreshing beverages.

We’ll be bringing you some of the best and most enjoyable classics ever and, of course, bringing them to the you in the Granada’s fabulous surroundings for your enjoyment.
